Chapter: contrast spring.

Objective

To reduce vibrations and stabilise the system’s operation at any rotational speed and operating temperature.

History

We examined, both theoretically and practically, all commercially available bearing systems – ball, roller and radial sliding bearings of the metallic type – but all tests yielded unsatisfactory results.

Prototypes were produced using alternative metal systems, but these also yielded negative results. It was only after exhaustive testing in the laboratory and on the track that we finalised the Torsion Controller project.

Thesis

The component described above resolves the following issues.

Throughout the range of the variation curve, the sleeve of the moving pulley (torque corrector) slides axially within the driven pulley assembly, skimming the hub of the fixed pulley, which undergoes a slight rotation, thereby imparting a torsional force to the counter-spring. Sometimes the spring loses its position due to friction against the metal-to-metal flange in a dry state, whilst at other times it remains in place, generating counteracting forces that vary unpredictably.

Second problem: the centrifugal forces generated at high rotational speeds affect the spring, which deforms and begins to wobble, creating strong vibrations that are unpleasant for the rider or dangerous for the engine, and which destabilise the gear-change curve.

Result

The project has been approved following tests in the test room and on the track on all the scooters examined, to our full satisfaction.
